How to Set Server Side Includes

Within your control panel you have the ability to setup Server Side Includes (commonly called SSI). Server Side Includes is a simple server side scripting language used almost exclusively for the web. As its name implies, its primary use is including the contents of one file in another. SSI HTML files usually use the extension *.shtml or, more rarely, *.shtm.

Setting up Server Side Includes

  • Within your hosting control panel click on the square icon that says Web Options. (if your not sure how to log into your hosting control panel please visit here)turn-on-asp-net-002
  • After you have clicked on “Web Options” select the domain you wish to modify.
  • Within the Web Options panel scroll down and in the row titled “SSI” click on the “Add” icon.ssi-001
  • On the “New SSI Alias” page you want to type the file extension into the text box. In this example we will use the “.shtml”. Remember to add the “.” before your file extension or it will not work correctly.ssi-002
  • Once you have entered your file extension click on the submit button.ssi-003After you “Submit” the update to the server you should be taken back to the “Web Options” screen with message “SSI Alias .shtml has been added successfully”.
  • After you have clicked on the “Submit” icon make sure to click on “Apply” within the “Server Configuration” row.ssi-004After you have clicked on the “Apply” link the changes will take effect within 15 minutes on our Linux servers. If you are using a Windows server these changes will take effect immediately.
