How to Reset a WordPress Admin Password

If you forgotten your WordPress admin password, or worse, if your WordPress has been hacked and you can not get the password, there is a way to reset the password.

Resetting Password with Email Address Access

If you have access to the email address used in the WordPress admin profile, then you can use the “Lost your password?” link. This will send you an email that includes a link to set up a new password.

Resetting Password without Email Address Access

If you no longer have access to the email address used for your WordPress admin profile, you can reset your admin password in the database.

First you must log into your control panel. Once you are in your control panel you will need to select the ”phpMyAdmin” icon:

You will then see a page that lists all of your database users. Click on the launch button next to the user that has access to the WordPress database that you need to change the admin password for:

  • Once you have launched the database user you should click on the WordPress database, and navigate to the wp_users table. Note: The default prefix for WordPress database tables is wp_. More advanced users may have a different database table prefix. Do not be alarmed if the table name is xx_users.
  • Inside this table, the first row should be the primary admin; however, you can reset the password for any user and/or admin here. The second row in the table will show you the user_login. Navigate to the row for the admin user that needs to have the password reset, and chose Edit for that row.
  • The third row is the user password. Enter a secure password of your choice. Make sure to set the “Function” option to “MD5” encryption.
  • If the database has been hacked, also change the email address found in the 5th row.
  • Save the new encrypted password by using the “Go” button at the bottom of the screen.

After you click “Go” your administrator password should be changed!
