How to Install WordPress Manually

WordPress has become one of the most popular Content Management System with our customers and the developers are commonly finding new ways to extend its functionality beyond that of a typical blogging platform.

How to perform a manual install of WordPress?

WordPress is easier to install and takes only around 15 to 20 minutes to install to your server and with the tutorial you will be able to install WordPress right away.

Check for compatibility

First check the compatibility of WordPress to the customer’s web server: versions (Most servers using Control Panel 6 & up can handle the newest version of WordPress.)

Upload the files

Once you have decided on a compatible version of WordPress, you can download it from
Unzip the WordPress files somewhere on your local machine and then upload them to your server using a FTP client. If you have questions about how to upload to using FTP review the article How to use Filezilla. Within your FTP client you have the ability to upload the WordPress files and sub folders to the root of the customer’s domain.
The WordPress zip should contain three folders and several files. The structure should look like this:


Create a Database

  • Within your hosting control panel click on the square icon labeled MySQL Server. (if your not sure how to log into your hosting control panel please visit here)setup-mysql-001
  • Select ‘Add Database’ at the bottom of the page.setup-mysql-002
  • In the MySQL Management window the first course of action is to create a name for your database. Within our control panel the database would be named in the format “<username>_<dbname>”.setup-mysql-003
  • After you have entered your database and your description click on the “Next” icon.setup-mysql-004
  • The next step in creating your database it to add a user that can access your database. Within our services the usernames are created similar in style to the database names themselves. Our database users are setup as <username>_<dbuser>. setup-mysql-008

IMPORTANT: Make sure the database user has DBA (full) permissions for the database. Failing to specify the proper permissions will cause errors during the installation process.

WordPress Installation Wizard

You are now ready to install WordPress! Follow these simple steps to complete the installation:

Navigate to the site: (If you uploaded WordPress to a subdirectory, be sure to include that in the path.) The WordPress installation wizard should begin.wordpress-install-001From this point click on the button “Create a Configuration file” button launching the WordPress easy installation menu. The installation wizard will have two screens to fill out information. (Unless you have manually created the wp-config.php file with the instructions above.)wordpress-02

In this window you will need the following Database connection information:

  • Database Name – The full name of the database created for this installation.
  • Username – The username for the database specified.
  • Password – Password associated with database user.
  • Database Host – Server address for customer’s database server. (
  • Table Prefix – Two or three characters specified as a prefix for the database tables. (It is generally recommended to change this to something other than wp_.)

After you have located all of the preceding information match up your information with the different text boxes within the window.wordpress-3

After entering all of the information click on the “Submit” icon to continue to the next step of the easy WordPress install. At this section WordPress is asking if you if it’s ok to install WordPress to your database.

Screen Shot 2014-03-19 at 3.22.01 PMWith the To proceed click on the “Run the install” button to let WordPress do their install magic. The next screen take you to the WordPress screen. On this screen you will need to provide the following information:

The next screen will ask for:

  • Site title – What do you want the site to be called?
  • Username – The first administrator for the site.
  • Password – The administrator password.
  • Password – Retype the administrator password.
  • Your E-Mail – What email address do you want associated with the administrator account? (WordPress will use this email to send notifications to.)

Once you have completed all the information click on the “Install WordPress” button located at the bottom of the screen.Screen Shot 2014-03-19 at 3.28.45 PMThat’s everything. Now WordPress will go and install the software to the server and make sure the database is connected correctly.
