How to Create a MySQL Backup Using phpMyAdmin

Before any changes are made to your database we recommend that you create a backup of your database to make sure any changes that are made can be unmade if needed. Using phpMyAdmin  to create backups is easy to do and only takes a few moments of your time.

How to create a backup using phpMyAdmin

  • In your hosting control panel click in the “Databases” row click on the icon labeled “phpMyAdmin”. If your not sure how to log into your hosting control panel please visit the article here.log into phpmyadin-001
  • Within the database user selection window click on the “Launch” icon associated with the user for the database you are looking to gain access to.log into phpmyadin-002
  • Once you are in phpMyAdmin click on the database you are needing to backup from the left side of the screen under the phpMyAdmin logo.log into phpmyadin-003
  • After you have selected your database and it has loaded you want to select the option “Export” located above your tables in the middle of your screen.export-database-001
  • Once you click on the “Export” tab you are taken to the Exporting tables section of phpMyAdmin. This section requires you to select the exact tables you wish to export as well as what format you wish it to be saved in.Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 4.17.33 PMWe are looking to export all tables so we have a complete backup of the database. Since we are wanting a complete backup we would select the option “Quick” which exports all tables within the database.export-database-002If you select “Custom” you have the ability to select specific tables you would like exported at this time. This option is good if you have a issue with a single table you are trying to fix enabling you faster access to the single table instead of having to review the full database.
  • After you have selected the export method you have the ability to select the format you wish to export your database to.Screen Shot 2014-02-06 at 4.22.44 PMWithin phpMyAdmin you have several file formats that can be used to export your database. Before selecting a download option you should check to see what format you need. In our example we will use the format “SQL” since our backup will be used in phpMyAdmin.export-database-003
