Finding your MySQL Database Information

Often it can be confusing discovering what information is needed when setting up a new website. It may seem like it would be easier to explain exactly what “wibbly wobbly timey wimey” means but in reality the information is easy to find within your control panel.

Where to find your database host name information

  • Within your hosting control panel click in the “Databases” row click on the icon labeled “MySQL Server”. If your not sure how to log into your hosting control panel please visit the article hereadd-mysql-user-001
  • Once you are on the MySQL Server information page click on the blue link that displays the name of the database you are trying to find information regarding.connect-database-001
  • After you click on the blue database link you will taken to the MySQL database management window. This window provides the majority of the information needed to connect to the database.connect-database-002Typically when connecting to a website or setting up a content management system (CMS) it will need the following information: Host Name (or often called Server), port number, name of database,  database username, and password.
  • Within the MySQL database management window the host name or server address is located in the row labeled “Host Name”. Make sure you do not input both the address and the IP address. Use the IP address only if the website or application calls specifically for the IP address.connect-database-003
  • If your website or application calls for a specific port it is located in the row labeled “Port Number”.connect-database-004
  • To connect to the server correctly you will also need the name of the database. The database name can be found in the row labeled “Database name”. Please make sure to use the full database name or it will not connect correctly to the server.connect-database-005
  • To log into the database from your website or application you will need to have the correct username and password to gain access. The different users allowed to access the database is located in the “database users” section but if you need a password please review the article How to change a MySQL database user password to see how to update a users password.
