Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn – help?

FacebookTwitterGoogle+LinkedInDiggEmail

OK, so I admit it. I’m as confused by “social media” as everyone else.

I can’t figure out how to get millions of followers on Twitter, or how to get hundreds of thousands of Facebook fans, or why I should even try.

But I can read the writing on the wall, and I’m willing to learn.

My friend and IX Web Hosting guest expert David Bullock is a genius about social media. He’s the co-author of “Barack 2.0: Barack Obama’s Social Media Lessons for Business” – and he’s agreed to share his social media chops with me – and you – in a series of video tutorials and live webinars over the next several months.

In this short clip (just 6 minutes and 19 seconds long), he explains just what the heck social media is, why we need to pay attention, and how to start using it to grow our businesses. (I’m taking notes!)

Watch the video here:

If you find it valuable, don’t forget to register for the zero-cost webinar on “How to Develop X-Ray Market Vision” on January 20, 2010 below.

Hey, this has me excited. Thanks ix Webhosting! This isn’t just filler stuff or the appearance of giving us something of value, this is the real thing. Looking forward to the webinar.

This video is useless to me without captioning.

  9. This sounds all very promising, but the way I see it, your focus will be primarily on the “market.” Could you also expand your strategies to non-profit, the art world (such as establishing an “orphan” art form), and other esoteric endeavors?

That was very imformative. I used Facebook to chat, before I realized that I could use it for my business. I am a photographer to relocated to Las Vegas several years ago. I lost all of my clients in the east coast, because they could not find me. I signed up for FB just to keep in touch with my family and friends. By chance I post photos and send some to my friends whom I’ve taken pictures of. Suddenly their friends were inquiring about me. Long story short. 90% of my business is off of Facebook, the clients can easily find me and they also refer me to their friends. I linked my website, of course through ixwebhosting and it’s has been amazing, the results. Know I fly to the east coast every two months to shoot.

  18. This was great ! We just recently set up on facebook and I have already set up a fan page. So I guess I'm on the right track. Now I'm going to join twitter. Can't wait for the seminar. Tanks

Thank you so much for your comments:

@ Dan Getting better tools is the key for using social media as it is easy to get overwhelmed with the space and chatter. We'll talk about some of the tools for both posting, monitoring and listening during the webinar.

    @ diajewels Thanks

@Ron Culbert – Those numbers were from the first few days. We now have 900+ Fans on the fan page. And traffic for the main site is over 100 uniques a day and our email list is growing so that we can do a real product launch.

One of the things that I find very interesting is that Google only accounts for 5% of the total traffic. Which means that the Social Media and Video deployment are the main traffic drivers for this project. Google traffic is extra.

@sandyryder Perfect example of using Facebook for business.

    Be Well Folks…

  21. Very interesting idea, how many have signed up I wonder?
Thanks Fathi, for engaging us all.

  22. I'd like to see again the first video you sent on Dec. 14, 2009 – “Getting on to Google.” Is it still available?

  23. I signed up but cannot attend. Please send the video. I work for a non profit and would also be interested in the non profit angle.

How do we become searchable? Why can't someone type in our company name and our website come up? How do I do that? Isn't that included in the Web Hosting price or do you have to pay extra? I'm confused and don't really know what I'm doing. What I'm asking is, when you want to find something like hair salons, you type in the search bar “hair salons” and then a bunch come up. How do I do that?

    • Hi there,

It's called Search Engine Optimization (“SEO”) and will be partially covered in our free Webinar! It's actually a science on its own, but you can achieve pretty impressive rankings for most keywords (such as “hair salons” – even though that word is quite competitive) with just a few basic steps.

      See you at the Webinar!

      Fathi

    • sandyryder - -

Good guestion kenzenbach, I also need to know how to add keywords with ixwebhosting. I've been with ixwebhosting for several years and my site never came up even if I googled my name. Now I'm in the number one spot. I believe what happened was I started drawing alot of traffic through my clients hitting my site. Once I started a fan page on FB, I linked my website and now my website is the first hit and my facebook fan page is the second. For example, if you have a hair salon, do a fan page and add photos of your clients. Link them on your website…remember people are visual, they want pictures. They would love to see your work. Take pics of your shop…etc…do whatever it takes to capture their interest.

  25. Fathi,
I signed up for the free webinar last week and am not sure if I need to do anything else. I did not get a confirmation email. Do I need to do anything else? My domain is http://www.newphoenixrising.com. Also, how long is the webinar so I can make appointments afterwards? Thanks for your assistance and for the webinar!
    Lance

Social Media is still a mystery to me and I just don't understand how some people get to make money out of it. Thank you for the webinars. I really hope I'll get to put in practice what I learned.

    • IX: Rob H. - -

@Raylamb: Like many forms of social media, Twitter isn’t for everyone.

  32. You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
