Blogging – One Chris tells you why, another Chris tells you how

The 1st Chris

On the topic of startups, Chris Brogan says if he were to start today “No matter what, the very first piece of social media real estate I’d start with is a blog. It’s a website, with lots of built in features that make it useful from a search perspective, and simple from a content creation perspective. That alone is worth the price of admission.” And Chris should know.

Chris Brogan Blog

Chris Brogan Blog

Chris Brogan is a ten year veteran of using social media to build digital relationships for businesses, organizations, and individuals. Chris blogs at, a blog in the top 10 of the Advertising Age Power150, and in the top 100 on Technorati.

With a blog virtually anyone can publish their thoughts, ideas and opinions to millions of potential readers. In return, those readers can “participate” by expressing their view points or comments. This method of communication is allowing all of us a means to become involved in information rather than just being passive consumers of it.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary awarded “blog” as “The Word of the Year” in 2004, when more and more people started using them as a means to express themselves personally. Today, blogs are reaching new heights in popularity. Many businesses and corporations are increasingly implementing blogs as they discover the flourishing opportunity it provides to build relationships with their existing customers as well as developing relationships with prospective new customers!

We’ve talked to many of our customers who say they want a web-presence. Cash is tight and they don’t have big advertising budgets. Blogging is a very inexpensive way to help accomplish this goal (all you need is your IX Web Hosting account).

Some of our customers haven’t started a blog because they are intimidated by the setup process. That’s where the other Chris comes in.

The 2nd Chris

Now that you’ve heard the reasons that a blog is the first thing to do from Chris Brogan, it’s time to hear from another Chris. Our own Chris Testerman. Chris will help you with the “how” do I start. Chris created this really awesome video that will show you how to set up a WordPress Blog in your IX Web Hosting account in under 2 minutes!

If you don’t have a hosting account here’s a blog post to let you know why you should.

Now, there’s nothing to hold you back!

Now that you’re ready to start creating your content, you are going to have to start sharing it with someone, right? So please, feel free to comment to this video with links to the blogs you’ve created. We’d love to take a look at them!

By the way, here’s a link to the tutorials Chris mentioned in his video:

  1. This is nice!, but I don’t have a cool apps button on my account page. Does a reseller account not have this option? Can I still install wordpress anyway, manually?

Thanks for a great hosting company, I’ve been happy with you for several years now.

  2. It works great, few months ago i had to find out for myself,
and this kind of blog than would be of a great help but nevertheless
i hope to see this blog filled with useful info.
    Good Luck.

  3. I want IX upgrade wordress from 2.5 ver to to 2.7.1.

  4. If you don’t have a cool Easy Apps button and you feel you need it, contact our support and we will be happy to send you some information on how to change to one of our control panels with this option.

Yes! You can still install wordpress manually. And actually wordpress’s claim to fame is their easy installation. If you have any trouble with this install, feel free to also contact our support so that we can help you through this.

    • I appreciate the support and ease of installation of WordPress. I am really beginning to love it, and now I'm using Artisteer for developing templates and they are great! I'm impressed and very happy.

  5. @AllSmartGames: Your wish has been fulfilled :) I have upgraded the version of WordPress that is installed by EasyApps to 2.7.1. However, due to the way EasyApps works, if you use the upgrade button, you will lose all customizations you made to the blog (like themes and plugins). I have no easy workaround for that, so please save your blog folder before you upgrade.

  6. That’s really excellent.

  7. It is a great race
I see that now wordpress 2.8 is released
    Thanks for the advice.

  8. Excellent video on WordPress!

  9. OK, so I can have a blog – all I have to do is get a different control panel, figure out what WordPress is, and get it all in under 2 minutes! Here's the latest news: it ain't workin'. Maybe the obsolete control panel stuff explains why the words in various helps don't match my screen. I was pleased to hear how easy a blog would be, and now I find it isn't. Thanks for all that.__On a positive note: we still expect to stay with ixwebhosting.

ixwebhosting wordpress installer will not install wordpress in the root directory, only a subfolder. This is lame, lame lame, since wordpress is more often used to run the whole site these days.

      Hi Polimon,

You are right, this is an annoying limitation of the Easy Apps script that we are looking into correcting. In the mean time, please feel free to call in for assistance! We have a couple options that we can assist you with getting your install into the root, or even masking root.

      • On Dreamhost, I install WordPress all the time with one click. One click. You should take a look at their control panel, as it is exemplary. You guys are a decade behind. We just called you to install WordPress on one domain, and when I visit the site, WordPress says, “There doesn’t seem to be a wp-config.php file…” You call this service?

          Hello Polimon,

I am not able to determine your account based on the info supplied. We would love to help you out, but we’ll need you to call in, chat, or open a ticket.

          • I called your help desk number, 1(888) 385-0450, and all I got was a high pitched screech on the other end. Congratulations. Your help desk is even more useless than your web panel. Why would you install WordPress and then not hook up the database? I suggest you dump your antiquated Easy Apps script and use Fantastico, like everybody else. One click installation of WordPress, which configures itself immediately afterward. But that would be too easy, huh?
